Newcastle Private Hospital will ban IVF, abortion and gender surgeries
Calvary Health Care will take over Newcastle Private Hospital. It will ban IVF, terminations, assisted dying and gender surgeries.
Calvary Health Care will cut reproductive and end-of-life services at Newcastle Private Hospital starting November 30. The bans cover IVF, assisted reproductive technologies, voluntary assisted dying, terminations, gender-affirming surgeries, sterilisation, and contraceptive procedures used only to prevent fertility.
Doctors have been told to expect these changes within three weeks. A large protest called Hands off our Healthcare is planned for noon Sunday at Civic Park.
State and federal MPs and health sector leaders will speak. Families affected by the cuts say they will need to travel to Sydney for these services.
This will add stress, cost and difficulty.

Why it mattersNewcastle residents will lose local access to important reproductive and end-of-life healthcare. Some will have to travel to other states. This puts difficult choices out of reach.
AustraliaThe takeover signals a broader shift in regional healthcare provision and raises questions about whether private Catholic operators should restrict services in public-serving hospitals.
