Wollongong bus routes face gridlock from Flinders Street towers
Buses on Routes 90 and 92 could face gridlock at Flinders Street roundabout if high-rise development increases traffic.
Dion's Bus Service warned the NSW Planning Department about conflicting traffic forecasts for the Level 33 redevelopment on Wollongong's old Bunnings site. The proposal includes five buildings, with the largest being 32 storeys and comprising 1260 apartments.
One model shows the Flinders Street-Throsby roundabout at 73% capacity by 2036. A nearby development claims it will hit 97%.
"One of these models is wrong," the bus operator stated. If the higher figure is correct, southbound buses will queue every morning before the new tower is even built.
Dion's says the proposal benefits from the bus network without improving it. No new shelters, lighting, safe crossings or even consultation with the bus company are offered.

Why it mattersCommuters on two key routes could face much longer waits if the towers create bottlenecks at a critical roundabout.
AustraliaDaily bus services in Wollongong's city centre will be directly affected unless the council resolves which traffic model is correct.
