Alice Springs metal venue hits $1m crowdfunding target to buy itself
Alice Springs' Black Wreath venue raised $1 million crowdfunding to buy itself outright.
The Black Wreath is the only dedicated live music space in Alice Springs, a town of 34,000 deep in central Australia. When the owners announced plans to sell, the venue's team began crowdfunding to buy it outright and place it in a trust.
Supporters from across the country donated between $20 and up to $10,000, hitting the $1 million target on Friday. Founder Pirate says the campaign is just step one: the owners are asking $1.23 million, so the team is seeking more donations and hoping to approach major bands for additional backing.
The venue has hosted hundreds of bands over the past decade and operates rehearsal spaces and a recording studio.
