Driver endangers two children during M4 pursuit and carjacking rampage
A man fled police on the M4, drove the wrong way, and carjacked a vehicle while endangering two children.
A welfare check on a 36-year-old driver in Belmore turned into a police pursuit on Friday after he refused to stop. The driver drove dangerously through Belmore and Auburn before police terminated the chase due to his erratic driving.
The driver then drove the wrong way on the M4 Motorway, hitting an oncoming vehicle. The driver got out with two children and allegedly tried to carjack another car nearby.
A 25-year-old man who tried to stop him was stabbed in the hand during the struggle. The driver then stole a woman's vehicle, bundled the two children inside and sped away on the M4 westbound.
An off-duty police officer arrested him on the Cumberland Highway at Wentworthville with help from bystanders. The two children were taken to Westmead Children's Hospital with minor injuries.
