Heard Island sunset captures spot in 2027 weather calendar

Jeff Miller's iPhone photo of lenticular clouds above Heard Island's volcano wins the November page of the 2027 Australian Weather Calendar.

Miller stepped onto the helideck of the Australian Antarctic Program icebreaker Nuyina shortly before sunset. Bitter cold and howling wind surrounded him.

Only one other person was brave enough to go outside. Miller left his usual digital camera inside.

His hands would have been too cold to use it. So he shot the lenticular clouds on his phone.

The clouds glowed above Big Ben, the island's stratovolcano. The photo captures a rare moment in one of Earth's most remote places.

Heard Island sits in the Southern Indian Ocean. It is remote and volcanic.

Miller works as part of the icebreaker's resupply team. He ensures Antarctic and sub-Antarctic research stations get the fuel they need each year.

Why it mattersThe image reminds us of something important. The best photos often come from being exactly where the light is right. You must be brave enough to stand in harsh cold to capture them.

AustraliaAustralians can order the 2027 weather calendar from the Bureau of Meteorology to see the full image and eleven others selected for their natural beauty.
