Andy Burnham says there was evidence Russia interfered in Brexit vote
Burnham said the answer was clearly yes, but gave no details of how Russia interfered.
Andy Burnham, Britain's prime minister since July, said Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum. Burnham made the claim in an interview with The Rest Is Politics podcast, released on Sunday.
Burnham is the first British prime minister to say openly there was evidence of Russian interference. Burnham did not explain how Russia interfered, and he gave no details on the evidence behind his claim.
The Russian embassy in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Russia has denied meddling in the Brexit vote in the past.
In 2020, former prime minister Boris Johnson said there was no evidence of Russian interference. A 2020 report by parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee said the government failed to establish whether Russia meddled.
