Hospital must pay sacked doctor after finding out via email from regulator
Launceston General Hospital must pay Dr Payamreza Azimisolisian compensation after unlawfully ending his contract via email to a regulator.
Dr Azimisolisian will receive compensation from Tasmania. The Industrial Commission ruled the hospital unlawfully sacked him.
Hired at Launceston General Hospital in late 2023, Dr Azimisolisian faced months of approval delays with medical regulator AHPRA. In May 2024, he used a template from his previous Queensland role.
He added the hospital's logo to speed up the paperwork. The clinical director accused him of creating an illegal document.
The director also threatened police reports. Rather than fire him directly, the hospital emailed AHPRA in June.
It withdrew his contract by email. Azimisolisian only learned he no longer had a job a month later.
This was when AHPRA sent the email to him. Commissioner Tim Abey found the accusations false.
He described the doctor's actions as a "misguided desire" to move the paperwork quickly. The termination method was "offhand and rude".

Why it mattersThe ruling makes clear that employers cannot end contracts through third parties. They must tell employees directly instead. This protects workers' rights.
AustraliaThe decision affects how Australian hospitals must handle overseas-trained doctors and sets a precedent for employment termination procedures across the public service.
