Beechworth opens new childcare facility with 22 places
New building opens Saturday with 22 places for four and five-year-olds.
Beechworth Community Early Years Learning Centre opens a new building on Saturday, dedicated to pre-schoolers before they start school. The facility addresses a waiting list that rarely falls below 50 families.
The $400,000 project was funded through community fundraising events and a $150,000 donation from Community Bank Beechworth. The centre can now take in up to 40 additional children once freed-up spaces are counted across all age groups.
The breakthrough came after the community rallied behind the centre when it was initially rejected for a council lease. Hundreds marched down the street in matching white shirts, and local businesses threw their support behind the push.
Council then agreed to grant an ongoing lease for at least five years.
