Cairns man builds academy for at-risk youth with life savings
Rob Hodge invested his life savings to found Fresh Start Academy, teaching mechanics and barbering to 24 at-risk young people per semester.
Rob Hodge left a comfortable government job after almost three decades working with at-risk youth. Feeling constrained in that role, he founded Fresh Start Academy and invested his own money and family time to create a different approach.
The program teaches practical trade skills in mechanics and barbering. It serves young people, including those flagged by youth justice.
About 24 students attend each semester. Half are aged 15 to 17 and disengaged from school or at risk of justice system involvement.
The program recently got $300,000 in funding through Queensland's Kickstarter scheme. This funding runs through January 2027.
Early results are strong. Four participants moved into apprenticeships and another four are continuing studies at TAFE.
Hodge said purpose and pride create lasting change.
