All 72 rams sell at Marong stud sale, top price $3100
Derby Downs Poll Dorset stud in Victoria sold out its entire herd at an on-property sale. The average price was $1545 per ram.
Derby Downs achieved its first full clearance in about four years at its annual ram sale near Marong on October 2. The stud sold 72 rams.
This included eight specially selected animals and 64 flock rams. The top-priced ram sold for $3100 to Ardazal Poll Dorset stud.
The second-top ram sold for $3000. The average of $1545 showed strong demand for the stud's genetics.
Buyers particularly wanted hindquarter quality and consistency. Bulk buyers were local farmers who bought 10 to 15 rams each.
They used them for commercial crossbreeding operations. Stud principal Lachie Bailey said the result showed strong client demand for their rams.
This was especially true for rams used in first-cross and Merino operations.
