Wollongong breaches height rules for new Helensburgh Library by 1.1 metres
Wollongong Council is breaching its own 12-metre height restriction for the new Helensburgh Library by up to 1.1 metres.
The long-awaited library and community centre has plans lodged with the local planning panel. The Walker Street site has strict 12-metre height limits, but skylights on the roof push the building over by 1.1 metres.
A variation request argued the skylights are not obvious from street view and do not harm the building's visual impact. Built on sloping ground, it will be two storeys on the streetfront and three at the rear.
The ground floor holds the library and work spaces; community halls sit on the first floor. Parking for 23 vehicles will be available at the rear.
Public exhibition runs until October 5.
