England wheelchair rugby squad learns to surf at North Wollongong
England wheelchair rugby players tried surfing at North Wollongong Beach ahead of the World Cup.
The reigning world champions were in Wollongong for the IRL Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup and took a day off training to hit the waves at North Wollongong Beach. Many of the England players had never surfed before and admitted they were nervous about sharks in the water.
Winger Luis Domingos said it was his first time and he spent the lesson worrying about snakes on the beach. Teammate Rob Hawkins joked that one player had a shark-tracking app on his phone and kept winding everyone up about sightings.
The players said it was an amazing experience and loved the chance to experience local culture. Coach and players praised the Pines Surfing Academy for making them feel welcome.
