Humpty Doo Hotel for sale after Rod Parry's four-decade run
Rod Parry is selling the Humpty Doo Hotel in the Northern Territory after nearly four decades owning the outback landmark.
The Humpty Doo Hotel, a Northern Territory landmark about 40 kilometres south-east of Darwin, is being sold after Rod Parry left following nearly four decades running it. The pub opened in 1971 and survived Cyclone Tracy.
Parry bought it in 1987 and made it famous for its unique name. The pub displays what are claimed to be the largest buffalo horns in the Southern Hemisphere hanging behind the bar.
Slim Dusty's Humpty Doo Waltz and Ted Egan's The Man from Humpty Doo made the place well-known in Australian folk music. The pub draws more than 50,000 visitors a year, many heading to Kakadu National Park.
Parry has added a bottle shop, RV park, gaming machines and bistro. He left the bar untouched, with concrete floors hosed down each morning.
He insists the new owner must have hospitality experience and respect what makes the pub work.
