ACT to ban bikie colours with jail time for repeat offenders
ACT plans to ban public display of outlaw motorcycle gang insignia with fines up to $2000 and jail for repeat offences.
Police want a new law called the Organised Crime Symbols Prohibition Act. The bill would ban patches, logos, tattoos and clothing linked to declared criminal motorcycle gangs.
Public display anywhere, streets, venues, pubs, would be illegal. Private property use with owner consent and media reporting would be exempt.
Police would gain power to issue warnings, take items and arrest those who refuse to comply. Breaching the ban carries a $2000 fine for individuals.
Repeat offenders could face up to six months in jail. A criminal justice expert called the measure a double-edged sword: it may reduce gang visibility and intimidation, but could also cut police intelligence.
ACT police spent more than $628,000 since 2024 monitoring gang gatherings.
