He chose differently. He packed a bag and spent his last $3,000 on supplies.
He decided to skateboard across Australia for a cause. Buchanan started from Melbourne's Frankston Pier on 8 September.
He rode solo with a small cart of gear and no support crew. He lost his ute to a deer strike at Cann River.
So he had to cross the Nullarbor twice. So far he's raised $2,300 toward his $100,000 goal.
Buchanan is speaking openly about mental health and addiction. He hopes his journey shifts how young people see their own struggles.
