German publisher cancels Ukraine-Russia romance novel after backlash
German publisher Molino dropped the novel Who I Am When You See Me after backlash over romanticizing military occupation.
A German publisher stopped a novel about love between a Ukrainian woman and a Russian soldier after criticism. The book was called Who I Am When You See Me and was set to launch on 1 November.
Publisher Matthias Slunitschek made the decision after receiving critical messages questioning if the story fairly showed Ukrainian experiences. The novel showed a Russian soldier rescuing a Ukrainian civilian in occupied Kherson.
They develop an intense relationship. Critics said this made military occupation and violence seem romantic.
Author Juna Liebrecht said the book aimed to promote humanity and peace, not glorify war. She apologized if people felt hurt.
