Police officer Mia Lay killed when patrol car hits tree at high speed
CCTV shows a patrol car traveling over 150km/h before it crashed in Redfern.
Constable Mia Lay was killed in a police patrol car crash in Redfern, inner Sydney, about 1:30am on Friday. The car was responding with lights and sirens to a report of a car theft in progress in Glebe.
Police sources told 9News the vehicle may have been traveling in excess of 150km/h before it hit a tree on Gibbons Street. CCTV footage from a nearby nail salon shows the patrol car hurtling down the street with lights flashing, outpacing two trucks.
The 24-year-old male constable who was driving has been discharged from hospital and has not been charged with any offence. A critical incident investigation into the crash is underway.
Lay's father said he hopes no one is deemed at fault and expressed gratitude for community support.
