A Florida mother has been charged with culpable negligence after her four-year-old son found a loaded handgun in her purse and fatally shot himself on 21 June. Diamond Phillips kept the .380 Smith & Wesson in her purse on the kitchen island, believing her children could not reach it.
The four-year-old climbed onto a stool, pulled out the gun and accidentally discharged it while looking down the barrel. Investigators found a bullet fragment lodged in the ceiling and a spent cartridge in the gun.
Phillips told authorities she carried the gun for protection when away from home and normally kept it in a zippered pocket without a holster. Florida law requires loaded firearms where a minor might access them to be kept in a locked container or with a trigger lock.
Phillips was arrested in September and released after posting $10,000 bond.
