Tesla in self-driving mode fatally strikes pedestrian on California freeway

A 71-year-old pedestrian died after being struck by a Tesla traveling at 112 km/h on a California freeway while operating in self-driving mode.

A 26-year-old driver told investigators that the Tesla was operating in full self-driving mode when it struck the pedestrian on a California freeway on Thursday night. Video reviewed by the California Highway Patrol showed the man walking from the right shoulder toward the centre divider, directly into the vehicle's path.

The Tesla applied its brakes and swerved left in an attempt to avoid the collision. Despite these evasive actions, the vehicle's right front struck the pedestrian.

The man was then hit by at least one other vehicle while lying in the traffic lanes. He died at the scene.

The driver remained and spoke to investigators; other motorists involved drove away. Investigators have not determined why the pedestrian was crossing the busy freeway in the middle of the night.
