High Court blocks app founder's appeal in transgender discrimination case

The High Court blocked Sall Grover's appeal. This ends a years-long fight over discrimination against transgender woman Roxanne Tickle.

The High Court refused Sall Grover's appeal over a discrimination ruling. Grover founded the now-defunct women-only app Giggle for Girls.

The decision, announced on Thursday, ends a years-long legal fight. Tickle, a transgender woman, was barred from the app in 2021.

She took Grover to court. In May, the Federal Court found she had been directly discriminated against.

The court awarded her $20,000 in damages, doubling her original compensation. Tickle had undergone gender-affirming surgery and updated her birth certificate.

Grover said the ruling "removed women's sex-based rights from law". She announced she will leave Australia.

Equality Australia called the decision a "major win" and said no further appeals remain.

Why it mattersThe case clarifies Australian anti-discrimination law. People cannot be left out of services based on gender identity. This applies even to women-only spaces.

AustraliaThe ruling confirms that Australia's Sex Discrimination Act protects transgender people and that sex is not limited to birth assignment, affecting how policies on gender are applied across services and spaces.
