Mirkov gets AFL lifeline after year away from the game
Greater Western Sydney offered Alex Mirkov a two-year AFL contract after he impressed in the VFL following time in amateur leagues.
Greater Western Sydney has offered former Carlton ruckman Alex Mirkov a two-year deal via the pre-season supplemental selection period. Mirkov, 26, spent 2025 playing amateur football with Old Ivanhoe in Melbourne after leaving Carlton, but impressed for Williamstown in the VFL this winter, averaging 32.7 hitouts and 11.7 disposals per game.
Mirkov passed his medical with the Giants last week. Mirkov was drafted by Carlton in 2021 but never played an AFL game despite spending three and a half seasons on their list.
His return to professional football fills a need for GWS, who are strengthening their ruck stocks to support Nick Madden.
