Confusion delayed help for Christa Pike after failed Tennessee execution
The first 911 call came in at 8.40 pm on September 30, and responders were cleared to enter at 9.11 pm.
Recordings obtained by The Associated Press show confusion delayed emergency help for Christa Pike. The first 911 call came in at 8.40 pm on September 30.
The call came just over an hour after the attempted lethal injection began. The caller said they had tried to execute someone, but she was still alive.
At 9.03 pm, a dispatcher said the call was false and no medical help was needed. Four minutes later, a responder reported someone at the gate was demanding entry.
Central Control later confirmed the call was real, and responders were let in at 9.11 pm. Pike, 50, was hospitalised after surviving two doses of pentobarbital, the drug used in the attempt.
The Tennessee Department of Correction has not said what went wrong.
