The Queensland government introduced legislation this week to repeal a 2023 law that forced coal miners to move from a work camp into Glenden. The original requirement aimed to stop the town from becoming a ghost town.
The government will now open registrations for people to buy homes and buildings or lease the whole town to private investors. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Kelly Vea Vea said the community was completely blindsided by the sudden reversal.
Authorities received no prior warning. Resources Minister Dale Last said the earlier laws had been rushed.
