Thoroughbred Park will include public housing but without 10 per cent guarantee
ACT parliament approved a 6200-home Thoroughbred Park development with public housing required but rejected a fixed 10 per cent Greens target.
Canberra's planned Thoroughbred Park redevelopment will include public and community housing. It will not have the guaranteed 10 per cent the Greens pushed for.
Labor and the Liberals amended the motion. They removed the fixed percentage but kept the requirement for social housing to be part of the project.
The 6200-home precinct could house up to 16,400 residents. Greens leader Jo Clay argued the timing was critical.
She wanted to lock in public housing before development started. She noted that public housing fell from about 11 per cent of ACT homes in 1989 to just 5.7 per cent now.
The waiting list has grown to over 3,600 people. Planning Minister Chris Steel said feasibility work needed to be complete before any percentage could be guaranteed.
