A new roadmap from Climate Analytics shows what Australia needs to do to limit global warming to as close to 1.5 degrees as possible. The 183-page report says coal-fired power must end by 2034 and new petrol and diesel car sales must stop by 2035.
Renewable energy would reach 87% of the grid by 2030, then 96% by 2035, and 100% by 2050. Oil demand would need to halve by 2035, and gas use would drop 90% by 2040.
Planes and ships would switch to sustainable fuels by 2045. Australia could cut its future emissions by 71% if it acts immediately, the report found.
