Chery launches Stockman ute to stay ahead of Geely in Australian market
Chery is launching its first ute to defend its grip on Australia's top 10 car sales.
Chinese car maker Chery is fighting back after losing its top-10 spot in August when rival Geely surged ahead. Chery held a place between eighth and 10th for every month until then, with 33,817 deliveries so far this year.
Geely climbed from 22nd place in January to 10th in just seven months by cashing in on demand for electric vehicles. Chery's first ute, the Stockman, arrives later this year as a diesel plug-in hybrid, with petrol versions following in 2027.
The move takes aim at Australia's top-selling utes, the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, and at a growing lineup of Chinese rivals like the BYD Shark 6, which sold 9,493 units in the first half of 2026. A new Chery electric hatch and sedan are also planned for next year.
Chery's chief operating officer said one month at the top doesn't prove the long game.
