Newcastle residents now pay about $11 daily to park outside homes

Extended parking restrictions force Newcastle residents without driveways to pay for evening parking outside their homes.

Newcastle Council extended paid two-hour parking zones from 5pm to 7pm in the city centre. Residents without off-street parking now pay to park on the street after work.

One resident with an apartment on Hunter Street said the $11 daily cost doubles his rates. The council acknowledged the unintended consequence at Tuesday's meeting.

Councillors are reviewing options including parking permits, EasyPark credits, or exemptions. These aim to help older properties that lack built-in parking.

Why it mattersThe change creates a burden for residents in older buildings without parking. Newer apartments usually include parking. This raises questions about fairness and where the cost should fall.
