Canberra picks five ovals to restore after the Millennium Drought
The ACT Government shortlisted five dryland ovals to restore, costing up to $1.5 million each.
Five Canberra ovals dried up during the Millennium Drought and have sat unused for years. Now the ACT Government wants to bring them back.
The five sites, Lyneham, Weston Creek, Spence, Narrabundah and Torrens, were chosen from 32 sites across the territory because they have parking, old irrigation that could restart, and space for new facilities.
Sporting participation is growing in Canberra and existing ovals are under pressure. Restoring these grounds would give clubs room to grow and let quality grass recover on overused fields.
A single oval costs upwards of $1.5 million to restore with new irrigation, toilets and amenities. The ACT Government is seeking community feedback on which ones matter most by 12 October, with money for the work to be decided in next year's budget.
