Boolaroo's Main Road to get first major upgrade in decades
Lake Macquarie council plans Boolaroo Improvement Project to modernise Main Road with focus on pedestrian safety.
Lake Macquarie City Council is revamping Boolaroo's Main Road after decades with no upgrades. The former industrial suburb is now booming with new housing, cafes and major retailers.
The Boolaroo Improvement Project will consider pedestrian facilities, drainage, landscaping, street trees and public spaces through a formal streetscape master plan. Local businesses have flagged pedestrian safety as the top priority.
Drivers regularly speed past the Main Road crossing. The suburb has transformed since the Pasminco smelter closed.
The Weemala housing estate is growing and Costco, Bunnings and fast-food outlets opened on nearby roads. Cafes are now springing up along Main Road.
Council is seeking feedback from residents and business owners until November 29. Mayor Adam Shultz called it a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to modernise the commercial strip while protecting the village feel locals value.
