Devonport man sentenced to community order for pub assault causing serious
Elian Anthony Elton Nicholls, 23, received an 18-month community order and 140 hours service after punching a man outside a Devonport pub.
Elian Anthony Elton Nicholls, 23, met his victim outside a pub in Devonport in January when they ran into each other while drinking. The other man had been sexually involved with Nicholls' former girlfriend.
After the man made a comment, Nicholls punched him repeatedly in the face until members of the public stepped in. The victim suffered fractures to his jaw, eye socket, and cheekbones and required surgery.
Nicholls had no prior convictions. Justice Michael Brett told him in the Supreme Court in Burnie that the violence was out of character but serious.
"Applying significant force to the head can be fatal," the judge said. Nicholls was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order and ordered to perform 140 hours of community service, with a conviction recorded.
