Woman, 22, dies as car hits tree on Indian Ocean Drive north of Perth

A 22-year-old woman died when her BMW crashed into a tree on Indian Ocean Drive at Breton Bay on Thursday afternoon.

The grey BMW sedan hit a tree by the roadside at Breton Bay, about an hour north of Perth, at 7.45am on Thursday. The young woman was trapped in the vehicle with critical injuries and could not be saved.

The 21-year-old driver and two other passengers in their 20s escaped with injuries not considered life-threatening and are recovering in hospital. Emergency services had to work through fallen debris and bushes to reach the car.

The crash closed a major stretch of Indian Ocean Drive between K.W. Road and Gingin Brook Rd in both directions but has since reopened.

Indian Ocean Drive has a troubled history: two Indonesian nationals died in a head-on collision at Neergabby in October 2024, and a man and woman were killed in another collision at Wedge Island in September 2025.

Why it mattersThe crash is the latest in a series of fatal incidents on a stretch of highway known for serious accidents, raising concerns about road safety despite government upgrades.

AustraliaPerth's Indian Ocean Drive has seen multiple fatalities in recent years, and Western Australia's road toll is at its highest level in more than a decade.
