Zelensky launches eight-nation alliance for trade and security
Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary formed a new regional grouping to strengthen trade and security ties.
President Volodymyr Zelensky started the Carpathian Eight at a summit in western Ukraine. The grouping brings together eight regional countries and the European Union.
The alliance aims to boost trade and security. The alliance also wants to improve the flow of goods.
It comes after Russia's 2022 invasion disrupted normal trade. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and Romanian President Nicusor Dan attended the first meeting.
Business leaders from the region discussed trade and investment deals worth about $1.6 billion. Some nations at the summit, including Hungary and Serbia, have not sent weapons to Ukraine.
