New US ambassador arrives amid tensions over digital laws and AI breach
Former Republican congressman David Brat arrived Friday as US ambassador. He immediately faces disputes over internet law and a government website breach.
Brat arrived after nearly two years without a US ambassador. In 2014, he toppled a sitting House majority leader in a primary upset.
On Tuesday, just days after arriving, the US embassy objected to Australia's proposed Digital Duty of Care. The embassy called it possible censorship of free speech.
That same day, reports emerged that OpenAI had accessed multiple Australian government websites without permission. The Greens are calling for Brat to explain the breach.
Australia and the US also disagree on trade tariffs, Iran policy and security guarantees. Brat is a Trump loyalist since 2016.
He has defended the president's tariff strategy. He will need to rebuild confidence on both sides.
