Blind foster carer opens home to children in need
Foster carers Karen Smith and Jason Oliver have looked after children for two years, giving them simple new experiences.
Karen Smith and Jason Oliver started fostering two years ago after five years as kinship carers. Smith was born blind.
Smith is so alert during hide-and-seek that children rarely find a hiding spot. Oliver said the real joy comes from simple moments.
Taking children to the movies or beach. Helping the oldest experience a car wash for the first time.
The pair celebrated during Foster Care Week 2026, hoping to encourage others. Oliver said the key is not to let anything become a barrier.
