VR headset helps Belconnen artist paint giant Kylie and Nick Cave mural
Street artist Lawrence Tan used a VR headset to map out a mural of Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave on a Belconnen wall, cutting mapping time to one hour.
Street artist Lawrence Tan pulled on a Meta Quest VR headset and projected Kylie and Nick Cave onto a Belconnen house wall in Hennessey Street. The technology let him trace their portraits digitally in an hour, a task that would have taken much longer using traditional grids, projectors or stencils.
A projector only works at night, and stencils are hard to position. The headset let Tan work anytime with both hands free.
Once mapped, he spent around 40 hours over several days painting the final artwork. House owner David wanted to brighten his blank wall after removing old foliage.
He asked friends for a recommendation and found Tan, who has created over 50 murals across the ACT and NSW. Neighbours appreciated the result so much they sent David a thank-you card.
