Melbourne health hub near Flinders Street Station to open October 19
The hub offers GPs, addiction specialists, showers and food, and a hydromorphone trial begins in 2027.
A new health hub for vulnerable people is set to open near Flinders Street Station in Melbourne. The hub will officially open on October 19.
Cohealth will run the government-funded centre, with GPs, addiction specialists and counsellors. Vulnerable people can also shower and eat there.
A trial of hydromorphone, an alternative to methadone for opioid addiction, begins there in 2027. Hydromorphone has worked overseas but is not yet used in Australia, apart from a small Sydney trial.
Traders and some councillors worry the hub will increase anti-social behaviour nearby. Health Minister Ingrid Stitt rejected the criticism and said the centre would improve the area.
Recent Coroners' Court data found 632 Victorian overdose deaths in 2025, up from 495 in 2016.
