About 877,000 Australian children and young people live with pain
Pain expert Fiona Hodson says only eight specialty pain services for children operate across Australia.
Chronic Pain Australia's 2026 Kids In Pain report found about 877,000 children and young people live with pain. Maddie Walters, 18, from Port Stephens, was diagnosed with an early-onset form of osteoarthritis at 14.
Maddie Walters says the pain feels like someone stabbing her repeatedly, mainly in her knee and foot. Pain expert Fiona Hodson says kids often wait up to three years for a diagnosis.
Ms Hodson says doctors often dismiss young people's pain as growing pains. Pain can cause kids to miss more school and miss out on friendships.
The Hunter has a small children's pain service at John Hunter, with a long waiting list. Ms Hodson says getting into a paediatrician in the Hunter is almost impossible.
