Don Pitt dies after 77 years at Neil Pitt's Menswear
Don Pitt, who spent 77 years at Launceston's Neil Pitt's Menswear, died this week.
Don Pitt died this week. Don Pitt joined his brother Neil at Neil Pitt's Menswear shortly after it opened in 1949, leaving a commercial printing job at age 16.
Don Pitt remained in the business for 77 years, helping build it into a central Launceston landmark. When the store opened, clothing was rationed and suits had to be custom-made at the cost of a month's wages.
The business survived five recessions. Pitt later established Bond Concrete Masonry, later known as Besser Tasmania, and was involved in major property developments.
In 2019, he became the ninth person in 170 years to receive life membership of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife Barbara and children Andrew, William and Jessica.
