Man charged with $1.5 million Medicare fraud after impersonating government
A 41-year-old Sydney man impersonated Services Australia staff to file $1.5 million in fake Medicare claims.
Police arrested a 41-year-old man at a house in Emu Plains, west of Sydney, under investigation for large-scale Medicare fraud. The man is accused of pretending to be Services Australia staff and used their details to file fake Medicare claims totalling $1.5 million.
Officers searched his home and seized a phone, laptop, and several identity documents. The man was charged with misleading a Commonwealth official and pretending to be one, was denied bail in July, and is expected to face Penrith Local Court.
Federal Police say the fraud took critical funds from those most in need.
