Canberra's Floriade flower festival opens Saturday at Commonwealth Park and runs until October 11. The theme is Feast of Flowers, celebrating food as much as blooms.
One garden design was inspired by the famous Australian Women's Weekly duck birthday cake. It's best viewed from the Ferris wheel.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr launched the festival Friday. Good weather over weekends and school holidays would be key to attendance, he said.
Last year Floriade drew 519,000 visitors; Barr hopes to reach half a million this year. Light rail construction on Commonwealth Avenue means limited parking near the park.
Free shuttle buses will run within the city. Express buses will run from outer suburbs.
