United forced passenger to reseat beside man she reported for indecent conduct
A 25-year-old woman reported indecent conduct during a flight. She was allowed to stand. As the plane landed, she was forced back to her seat.
A paediatric therapist on a United Express flight from Rochester to Newark on September 3 reported a man masturbating beside her. The woman right away moved away and told flight attendants what had happened.
The crew allowed her to stand for most of the roughly one-hour flight. As the plane was about to land, she was told to return to her seat because no other seats were available.
She refused multiple times but was told she would only need to sit there for about five minutes. Because they were seated toward the back of the plane, she remained beside him much longer as other passengers left.
The man then walked away without being asked by police or other officials. When she complained to a gate worker, she was told: "What am I supposed to do about it?"
United later contacted her using language she considered downplaying, referring to "behaviour from another passenger that caused you concern" rather than describing what she had reported.
