Newcastle artists open first exhibition at Nobbys Lighthouse
Seventeen local artists who lacked studios and industry contacts are now exhibiting at Nobbys Lighthouse.
Lucy Egan and Estelle Leishman found it hard to break into the art world. The barrier was especially high if you struggled with money, had a disability, or didn't know anyone in the scene.
The pair started a group chat called Newcastle Art Besties. The group began meeting in duck parks, reserves and the Hunter Wetlands.
The Castle Arts Collective grew to 17 artists plus friends from other fields: ecologists, hairdressers, science communicators. The group created an Australian gothic concept and printed a zine.
It unexpectedly sold worldwide. Their first real exhibition is at Nobbys Lighthouse until November 1.
It opens from 10am to 4pm on weekends. The work includes ghoulish photography, watercolours, embroidery and handwoven pieces.
All explore the eerie side of Australian culture and landscape.

Why it mattersIt shows how artists can build real chances together when official doors stay shut. The lack of access became a creative community instead.
AustraliaFor Newcastle artists and anyone in Australia shut out of traditional galleries, it proves a direct path exists: find your peers, make work publicly, and build your own venue.
