Brisbane Broncos weigh rivals to Carrigan for captain

Patrick Carrigan is no lock for Brisbane Broncos captain, with Ben Hunt, Kotoni Staggs and Billy Walters also considered.

Patrick Carrigan is a frontline contender for the Brisbane Broncos captaincy but not a sure thing after Adam Reynolds' retirement. Coach Michael Maguire will decide when pre-season resumes.

Ben Hunt, Kotoni Staggs, Billy Walters and new recruit Mitch Barnett are all in contention. Hunt has just signed a one-year extension that keeps him at the club to lead young halves.

Staggs, like Carrigan, had an inconsistent 2026 but has State of Origin and international experience. Walters is more of a dark horse, but has the backing of former captain Corey Parker, who called him "the complete package."

Carrigan averaged just 100 run metres this year, his lowest since 2019, though his tackle count hit a career-high 42.1 per game.
