Tooro kingdom split over mystery heir as new king takes throne
King Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma took the throne, but the late king's mother and sister claim a 2022 will named another heir.
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died and was buried September 12 at Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal, Uganda. Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a 56-year-old news anchor, was chosen by the royal clan to succeed him and took power during the burial.
Oyo's mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and his sister Princess Ruth Komuntale say a 2022 will named the late king's biological son as heir. The child has not been publicly identified.
Babiito clan elders guard the royal lineage and decide succession. They say Oyo had not introduced the child through custom practice.
Instead, he backed Kijanangoma as his successor. Oyo became king at age three in 1995.
He was the world's youngest reigning monarch.
