Neal Thompson remembered as Bendigo honours fallen officer
Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson was fatally shot. He was executing a warrant at Porepunkah on August 26, 2025.
Bendigo's police commander paid tribute to Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson. This was ahead of a police Remembrance Day service on September 30.
Thompson died after being shot by Dezi Freeman. He was executing a warrant at Porepunkah in August 2025.
Inspector Peter Carey called Thompson "a Bendigo lad, well-known in the community". He praised the courage of young officers who face danger every day.
"At any moment, everything can change and turn really bad, which is what happened," Carey said. The Remembrance Day service will be held at St Paul's Anglican Church.
It is open to the public. Carey said the police family stands ready to support those grieving lost colleagues.
