ACT reviews aquatic centre plans for next decade
The ACT government is hiring consultants to study whether Canberra needs a statewide swimming facility by 2037.
The ACT government is looking for consultants to develop a 10-year swimming strategy from 2027 to 2037. The plan will check whether Canberra needs a statewide swimming centre.
A statewide swimming centre would be on the same scale as major facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Consultants will check whether the territory can attract national and international swimming events.
They will work out the economic benefit. The strategy will also look at the condition of government-owned pools.
It will work out upkeep and upgrade costs over a decade. It will also examine risks from private pool ownership, such as the dormant Big Splash Water Park.
The government wants the report finished before the end of 2027. It has already committed to building a new pool at Commonwealth Park.
A new 50-metre outdoor pool will also be built in Woden. Recommendations must focus mainly on government-owned facilities.
