The North West Regional Hospital in Burnie is getting a $14.5 million emergency department upgrade. The work is starting now and will finish by mid-2028.
The ED sees about 30,000 patients each year. Some days it treats over 100 patients.
Work includes expanded triage areas and better security. It will have clearer views and wider passages.
New facilities will serve people with disabilities and mental health needs. The project was developed with input from hospital staff, Ambulance Tasmania, police and community.
A 2023 stabbing of an ED doctor led to a new focus on security improvements.
