Kyle Swan jailed six months for assaulting off-duty police officer
Kyle Swan, 32 and homeless, was jailed six months for attacking an off-duty police officer in a sports store.

The court heard he confronted and assaulted a high-ranking off-duty officer in the store. Magistrate Tim Bourke rejected a plan for jail with a corrections order.
Bourke said Swan had a pattern of behaviour that needed a short, sharp sentence. He told Swan that work would be his most empowering option after release.
The magistrate noted Swan had not engaged with mental health services. He had self-medicated with drugs instead, leading to repeated offending.
Bourke said that abstinence and employment were essential to avoid reoffending.
