Canberra metal festival Essence returns with 31 acts across three days
Essence: Beyond the Threshold, Canberra's underground metal festival, runs three days with fewer than 31 acts spanning multiple genres.
The festival, curated by musician Dan Nahum, is now in its third year and has grown from a concept to an established event in Canberra's music calendar. This year brings early-career, emerging and established bands from across Australia.
The Amenta (NSW) will perform their 2004 debut album front to back. Suldusk (VIC) will preview unreleased tracks from their third album, and bands from the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland round out the national lineup.
Canberra artists including Nyctalor, Making Out, Thought Cabinet and Rodenticide are also on the bill. Friday opens with a pre-fest curated by the Gutter Prince Cabal label.
Local sponsor Capital Brewing Co is providing band support, which represents growing legitimacy for the event.
