Northern Midlands Council spends $600k on building without consulting community
The council spent $600,000 on a High Street property for a visitor centre and museum without asking the community.
On September 3, the Northern Midlands Council announced it had bought 81 High Street in Campbell Town. The property became the permanent home for the town's visitor information centre, museum, and community hub.
The purchase came almost seven months after Campbell Town Hall was sold, which had previously held these services. Local business owners are frustrated the council did not consult the community first.
A poll of 188 locals showed only 1% wanted the money spent on the museum and information centre. Community members said the money should have gone toward finishing the streetscape project.
They also wanted a new park or pool cover instead. The council said consultation only happened through a committee that searched for a new museum home.
